Rocco Mediate Forces US Open Playoff

An 18-hole playoff with Rocco Mediate and Tiger Woods will be held Monday for the U.S. Open golf championship at the Torrey Pines Golf Club. Rocco Mediate and Tiger Woods ended Sunday’s play with 1 under par each.

 

It will be the 33rd playoff in the tournament’s 108-year history and the first since 2001. Tiger Woods calmly sank a 12-foot birdie on the 18th hole Sunday to tie Rocco Mediate.

Tiger Woods, 32, pursues his 14th major on Monday, while Rocco Mediate, 45, will try to become the oldest player to win a U.S. Open. They were the only players in the field to finish below par in the season’s second major tournament.

Woods would be the first U.S. PGA Tour player to win tournaments seven times on the same course. He also won the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008.

Rocco Mediate nearly sank a birdie on the 18th, which would have won the tournament, but it just went off to the right. He settled for a 1-under 283 for the 4 rounds of play.
