Drivers Tom Kristensen of Denmark, Rinaldo Capello of Italy and Allan McNish of Britain made the best of wet racing conditions Sunday to beat top rival Peugeot diesel cars in the 76th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans sports car race.
The Audi R10 TDI led after three hours Saturday in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. In the third hour, the Peugeot No. 8 had to stop for 20 minutes in the pits because of a gearbox problem while the Peugeot No. 9’s headlights failed to work.
Three Peugeot 908 HDi cars, including Peugeot No. 7 co-driven by Nicolas Minassian and Jacques Villeneuve of Iberville, Que., were in the lead during the first two hours. Villeneuve was thwarted from becoming the second driver after British-born Graham Hill to win the Triple Crown of auto racing.
