For the Texas Rangers designated hitter, Milton Bradley has been a mixed blessing and sometime star team player, but he has a few emotional issues that seem to appear at inopportune times, and play out in public.
This time a comment by announcer, Ryan Lefebvre, apparently was taken as an affront by Milton Bradley, who proceeded in a rage to climb the 20 steps to the announcers’ booth before being stopped.
Emotional reactions, or emotional control, especially anger management is a challenge for us all but it is doubly important for any public figure or sports player whose livelihood is dependent on their on-field and off-field behavior.
Outbursts of uncivilized rage and actions is a clue to a deeper personality disorder that requires professional help when it interferes with everyday function and performance.
It’s not unusual to become outraged, angry, or infuriated as long as we acknowledge the cause and assess the validity of the reaction. Anger management is the process we go through to take primitive instinctual responses to stimulus and decide rationally how to react.
In the heat of battle with a life-threatening adversary anger and emotional adrenaline is a valuable force multiplier. But in the domesticated version of battle we call sports it is inappropriate to take comments as personal attacks worth threatening someone physically.
