There’s a little more buzz than usual on Metro PCS in the last day. What’s going on?

Metro PCS is one of the less known wireless phone service providers that offers cheaper rates than most major carriers and in areas that are less well serviced.

And yesterday, shares in the smaller wireless carriers such as Metro PCS and Leap Wireless climbed after the previous days’ talk about Verizon and Alltel in takeover talks.

So maybe Metro PCS is also a target of a buy out?

Metro PCS is mostly known for its unlimited $30 per month plan, but it does have a few coverage issues outside its local area. Roaming charges are a common complaint with users, and also a limited selected of better quality handsets.

If you are looking for a bargain plan and expect to use your wireless phone mostly locally then you could get the Metro PCS package with a reasonable handset, still be able to download or change ringtones, but don’t plan on smartphone Internet features or music mp3 players as part of your phone.

Recently Metro PCS extended their coverage area in Las Vegas but its main focus has been in California, Florida and parts of Georgia, Michigan and Texas.

Since Metro PCS uses CDMA technology roaming would be accessible through other providers such as Sprint and Alltel.

Many third parties offer downloadable ringtones if the Metro PCS system does not satisfy your needs.
