Can the iPhone be used on T-Mobile in the USA? That would be cool to get more ringtones, more choices of wireless hotspots and VOIP through hotspot to T-mobile connections.
Lets see. iPhone is a quad-band transceiver, in the US using Cingular, now owned by AT&T, wireless network of GSM at 850MHz and 1900MHz. T-Mobile uses GSM at 1900MHz frequency also. (T-Mobile phones from Europe don’t work in the USA if the handset has 900/1800MHz).
The most common Internet access method for iPhone users in the US would probably be via ubiquitous wifi hotspots, usually free to access. Away from wifi, the iPhone can connect to the Internet via AT&T EDGE technology implementation, at 2G speeds, or about 32kbps. That is way too slow for music downloads, or web surfing, but feasible for some WAP text browsing.
T-Mobile has GPRS EDGE service too again at 2G speeds. However as a smaller company in the USA it’s coverage is spotty and weak in many parts of the country. Transfer rates tumble as the signal strength drops.
The major drawback of T-Mobile’s network and service is that data plans are priced separately. A prepaid or T-Mobile To Go method works well for voice calls, but that only allows GPRS access to a limited text portal to the Internet. Not surprising, because the network speed is barely adequate for that. A paid data plan opens up access to hitching a ride on to the AT&T backbone.
T-Mobile won’t admit to any iPhone compatibility but with a SIM card and a simple hack an iPhone can connect to T-Mobile and use its EDGE network with the T-Zones data plan at only $5.95 per month.
Even though T-Mobile is expanding its coverage and rolling out a 3G data network, don’t expect an iPhone to work on it. T-Mobile’s next network will use 1700Mhz and 2100Mhz. Go figure.
