The Gateway Core Duo Widescreen Notebook model MT6840 looks like a real winner at $500. But how does the Gateway MT6840 notebook compare to others in the class? Let’s take a look at the specs for the Gateway notebook and see how it stacks up in the widescreen core duo category.

First off laptops or notebooks are getting more powerful and less expensive such that they are now a real alternative to most people’ desktop PCs. With the portability and battery ‘backup’ aspects, a laptop makes even more sense.

The latest crop of wide screen notebooks and duo core processors up the usability by offering more screen real estate, possibility of an additional monitor and almost full size keyboard.

First take on the Gateway MT6840 duo core wide screen notebook is that the specs are average: 2GHz cpu, 1Gb ram, 160GB hard drive, 15.4" glossy screen. There is a touchpad for mouse action.

First impression is that the MT6840 15.4" screen does not permit a large keyboard that is possible with a 17" laptop, so there is no numeric keypad except what’s embedded in the combo keys of the keyboard. That shouldn’t bother many people. A 17" screen is nice for viewing multimedia videos and DVDs in a wide profile.

For home office work an extra monitor is a great boost to screen space and having multiple windows visible, and the Gateway wide screen notebook has a vga display connector, which is also great for plugging in a digital projector.

Other connectivity features include, dial up,10/100 ethernet,4 USB, firewire,4 in 1 card reader, and stereo sound with mic input but no camera, DVD RW.

Maximum video resolution is 1280 x 800 and 224MB of integrated video ram.

Downside to all these features is a 6.4 pound machine plus add power supply and cables.

The worst feature however is that the OS is Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium. Many people refuse to accept this as better than XP. Removing Vista and installing XP is possible with some technical knowledge regarding SATA drivers, but be warned that ‘upgrading’ to XP may cause other things to not work well, and void the warranty.

The Gateway duo core wide screen comes with bundled applications software but nothing of much value. Trials of MS Office, and McAfee security are temporary bonuses that just take up drive space and get annoying when updates are loaded unnecessarily.

Gateway core duo widescreen notebook has a mixed reputation but provides a reasonable choice for value and performance.
