The Mermaid Parade returns to Coney Island this weekend for its annual event. The Mermaid Parade is in its 25th year and is staged to entice people to Coney Island for fun and games. This year however the Mermaid Parade organizers want people to come back and protest a city rezoning plan to allow high rise in the amusement district.

"The Mermaid Parade is a celebration of the true spirit of Coney Island, so it’s perfect timing actually," said Dianna Carlin, owner of the Lola Staar boutique on the boardwalk.

Floats and marchers dressed as mermaids and fish pass through the boardwalk. Antique cars are displayed nearby.

Last year 850,000 people turned out and has become a tradition for New Yorkers.

The Mermaid Parade starts at 2 pm Saturday on West 10th Street and goes through to Surf Avenue.

Protesters against the Coney Island redevelopment plans will be handing out flyers for the Tuesday hearing and postcards that can be mailed in. The public meeting will discuss and determine the fate of the amusement zone, which is the Mermaid Parade’s only venue.
