First impressions are that Mass Effect graphics look fantastic on both platforms.
From the opening scenes it is apparent that the backgrounds and character details are some of the best ever presented in a game console program. These incredible scenes are part of the appeal to the intriguing story line. But the visual richness is even more enhanced in the PC version.
Remember that the XBox 360 shows a maximum resolution of 720px. A Windows PC video system can display much higher resolutions of 1440 to 1600px, depending on your graphics video subsystem. Does the Mass Effect program take advantage of the PC graphics?
A sharper, high resolution, high definition scene brings the action to even more realistic levels and is more convincing and appealing. Some of the distracting and jarring graphic jitters in the XBox 360 have been eliminated from the PC version, which maintains a higher immersion experience in the almost live action feeling.
There are some new hot key features but no major changes to the overall action. Don’t look for new quests and weapons in the Windows PC version. That may be the biggest disappointment for some players. The debate will remain as to whether a keyboard or a game console is the preferred interface.
Either way, whether you choose the XBox 360 or the Windows PC to play on you’ll be pleased with the Mass Effect game. Neither version can claim to have an upper hand on the outcome of one of the most popular cinematic sci-fi games ever made. The success of Mass Effect is more to do with the content than the technical achievements, impressive though they are.
Bioware plans to release two more sequels and a episodic version for XBox Live. The Mass Effect game will be around for a while and is published through Electronic Arts.
