The 62nd Tony Awards are presented tonight for the best shows on Broadway. Predictions  for  musical and dramatic accolades vary from the 60 year old Rogers and Hammerstein’s "South Pacific", to the film flop "Xanadu". Broadway adaptations throw expectations into anyone’s guess.

Box office numbers for Broadway shows are slightly down over last year, mainly due to the union strike last year.

The long time favorite stories of family disagreements continue to be popular. Broadway stage shows create a medium that makes personal relationships amongst characters along with striking sets a theme worth repeating.

South Pacific is such a musical drama, and with a large orchestra to enhance the experience Lincoln Center has been filled as tickets are quickly sold out.

Another perennial favorite is "Gypsy" which is on again for the fourth version on Broadway.

Familiar recreations of "Grease" and "Sunday in the Park With George" are also in the nominations for musical acting.

Tonight’s Tony Awards will be presented by Whoopi Goldberg as hostess. Categories for prizes include best musical, best play, best revival, best musical actor and best musical actress.

The Tony Awards air on CBS at 8 pm Eastern.
