New Orleans is responding to the affects of a massive oil spill on the Mississippi River. A collision between a fuel barge and a tanker dumped more than 400000 gallons of heavy fuel oil into the water. The Coast Guard closed nearly 30-miles of the River from central New Orleans southward.
Ten members of the Coast Guard National Strike Force are dealing with the fuel oil spill. The 600-foot ship, Tintomara, and an oil-laden barge collided breaking the barge in half. Tugboats hold up pieces of a barge. It might be several days of clean up before the Mississippi River at New Orleans can reopen.
